Hampshire 1:10,560 (Six-inches to one mile) : First Edition : 1870-1877
The early engraved six-inch sheets are generally considered the finest maps the Ordnance Survey ever issued. The crisp black detail was later lost when other production methods were introduced.
The maps listed below are full sheets, with a mapped area of 24” by 36”. Publication dates are given for each sheet, with many bearing a blind stamp, dated only a few years after publication. Hence, these are very early printings of each sheet.
The early states showed only the named county, with the area of adjoining counties being blank. In the entries, if a sheet covers more than one county, the size of printed area (Hampshire) is noted, e.g. 1/3 full (of mapped detail).
Postage in a tube will usually be about £3.
See Sussex page for examples of map detail.
Sheets 1 to 49
Sheets 1 to 49 are all in good, bright, clean condition unless noted otherwise. The very edges of each sheet (about a quarter of an inch) might be slightly yellowed, and many sheets have very light marking of the margins, usually to the top margin, but really do not detract from the whole.

Sheets 50 to 87
Sheets 50 to 87 all show water damage to the lowest few inches of the sheet, shown as 6″ or 8″ in each entry. This is seen as a light brown colouring, sometimes with a slightly darker purple colouring. Above this, each sheet is usually in very good clean condition. We are listing these, as the early sheets are seldom available, and even damaged, will be of interest.
